Question about linksys wireless card

hoping for some imput...I feel that I've done the research but want to make sure I am buying the right item

I have a linksys wireless-G 2.4 GHZ broadband router hooked up to my main puter (via wire)

my plan is to put a wireless card into the old computer so kids can use it elsewhere in the house

I chose a card rather than usb connect thinking that the signal would be stronger with no "fade in or outs"

don't hesitate to recommend something else... just don't want to buy something that I'm stuck with and is uselsss

I set up the same wireless router.

-Do you have the WRT54G or the WRT54GS? If you don't have the "S" router might as well just get a regular card got a Speedbooster model.

It is set up at my G/F's house and I have her laptop wireless with Linksys GS card and one hardwired, I'm adding a PCI wireless card like you have linked to on a computer downstairs for her parents.


But yes that card will be nice... It should get good signal but it really depends on positioning of your transmitter (router), interference, and amount of stuff blocking it.

I looked at the router and it is a WRT54G... so I will just go ahead and order the item...

The USB solution actually will work better than that wireless card because you can reposition a USB wireless adapter for better reception. Can't do that with the wireless card.

There are wireless cards with a cable-connected antenna that can be moved about for better reception-- Perhaps you might check those out if you don't want USB.

I have several Linksys WUSB54G Version 4 wireless USB adapters around the house on different floors and they work fine. (previous versions of it sucked though).

That is a good point about being able to manipulate its position (put it on top the desk for example). The speed difference wouldn't be noticed either. I'm not sure if USB can provide the full speed that a 10/100 cable or a 54mbs wireless PC/PCI card can but it is probably close. Close enough the kids or old folks (lol) won't notice a difference.

Ok so if you have a WRT54G then there is no reason to get the "S" (Speedbooster) series PCI card (or USB whatever you decide on) for the desktop computer. Just get their regular "G" series (Not "G" w/speedbooster)

Unless of course the price is the same then go ahead and get it anyways. It will still work just fine you just don't get the "Speedboost" because the router isn't a GS just a G.

The price difference is probably 5 bucks at the most. Just keep the speedbooster model. Maybe some day you'll get a new wireless router and it will have the technology or something. Can't hurt to have it

finally got it worked out. GS was $50 the G was $27 minus a $10.00 rebate. It was a "Trend" not a "linksys"
only saw 1 review on it and the guy said it worked as well as he as seen the linksys perform. For $17 what the hell....

yeah especially if it is in the kids computer, as long as it works.

when I add a card to my girlfriends Dad's computer i'll buy a D-link probably and save some money instead of getting the linksys


But as long as you got G you'll be ok. 17 is a good bit cheaper that 50

For internet activities even 802.11b is enough.

The difference between 802.11g to the 802.11g Super or booster, provides mainly a boost for heavy LAN file transfer users. In your situation (secondary computer for kids) it does not make any difference what so ever.

USB might be a better idea but in order to work well with 802.11g it has to be USB2 capable. Otherwise get a PCI with external Antenna, and if necessary, you would have to get another Antenna.
