Question about Lexapro...

My doc gave me a prescription for Lexapro today, 10 mg, anti depressant.

For those of you that have taken this, did you drink alcohol at all while on this medication? I know it says not to, but thats not really an option for me.

Never stopped me. I was on it for about 5 months last year and drank about as often as I did before I started taking it. Never had any issues from mixing the two but I never really got smashed either. Just the usual few glasses of wine during the week and a 6-pack or so of beer during the weekend.

Can't say I cared for Lexapro much though. Did wonders for me during the first month. But after that, it turned me into a zombie and I was incapable of feeling any emotions at all. I went from being depressed to just being "dead." I could feel elements of happiness, sadness, anger, etc. Just emotionally numb as it gets. I have never felt so apathetic in my life. I had to ween off it shortly after that and have not had a need to take it again since.

Both my best friend and my cousin were on Lexapro. Yes, many medications offer precautions that are sometimes silly. But I highly suggest following this one.

EDIT: This includes relatively small amounts of alcohol.

Check to see if it has any potential side effects on your liver. If it does, you'll be doing VERY severe damage by taking it and drinking it at the same time. This was the reason I couldn't drink while on Accutane.

EDIT: Also, I'm pretty sure some anti-depressants can actually worsen depression. Worsened depression + alcohol use could result in some pretty serious situations.

um... not drinking alcohol should always be an option.

and why exactly is it not an option for you? so you can hang out with all the other cool kids who drink, so you can fit in?

Well I shouldn't say it's not an option. I just occasionally enjoy getting drunk and having fun with friends. It sounds like Lexapro taxes the liver to begin with and alcohol would be pretty rough on it.

Thanks for the comments everyone, im gonna wait til Sunday to try this stuff, hope it helps me.

Depending on how severely it does, and how much you drink, a few months of drinking + Lexapro could possibly equal a few years of normal drinking. Not to mention a whole slew of other liver problems.

Then you need to seek counseling. It's called alcoholism.

Nasty stuff in my experience. This was the first AD medicine I tried a few years ago; the stuff made me constantly dizzy. Even felt like the bed was spinning when I tried to go to sleep. So I took it for all of 3 days, and gave up. Fortunately I hadn't spent any money on a prescription; the doc sent me home with a week or two worth of samples.

I don't drink, so I can't tell you about alcohol and Lexapro. But I do have some stories. If I did not eat before taking it, I puked. Every single time. Effective at stopping depression, but nasty, nasty shiat. I take Wellbutrin now, and it's much milder. Wellbutrin (without food) merely burns my stomach. 🙂

x3

The excessive alcohol consumption is probably what got you depressed in the first place. You really should take a few months break from alcohol while starting the medication and see how you feel.

I was on lexapro for about a month and a half. It made me into a freakin zombie. It's like I was a whole other person. I couldn't think for myself at all or fuction as a normal human being. It was awful.....

I take Efexor XR - no more side effects now, but when I first started taking it, the stuff gave me gas so bad I thought I was going to start flying around the room 😛

Having worked in a pharmacy for some years I always recommend avoiding alcohol and medication together. Sure many drugs say there's no problem, but only because the FDA couldn't find a conclusive link to warrant such a warning. Drug companies try hard to avoid labels on common medications, such as for depression, diabetes, cholosterol, acid reflux, etc. that prohibit their use with something as common as alcohol consumption to encourage widespread use.

In short, if you can avoid mixing alcohol with any prescription drugs, I suggest you do so.

Yeah I don't want a new liver down the road. If im gonna drink i'll only have like 1 beer ever so often, I don't think that will hurt much.

I'm a little worried from the other posts how this stuff is gonna make me feel. It seem's totally different for each person.

A lot of them are. Your best bet is to take it for a week or two and see how you do; if the side effects don't go away and / or are too much to deal with, go back to the doctor and ask him to change it. That's what I had to do.

Lexapro doesn't necessarily kill your sex drive. Some people, it turns into the energizer bunny. You just keep going and going and going. It is sometimes used to treat PE.

Don't know how serious to drink with Lexapro, but anyone taking Wellbutrin should NOT drink. The side effects of alcohol + wellbutrin can be really scary.
