I was looking to purchase a laptop, and Xanathar posted the following:

<< I have an NEC 233 mmx, 4 gig drive, 64 ram <still empty slot of upgrade> and a 13.3" active matrix tft, the only problem with it is the is slighlty broken <actually a chip went bad> and there is a 1/8-1/4 inch stripe of white down the left center of the screen, fine depending on what you use the notebook for, even has usb. the LCD itself is fine, all it needs is a new pcb <all ribbon cable connected
on back of LCD, if you can find one> im looking for 400$ great if you just need some portabily, and have an external monitor. not so great for typing because you have a line which coveres 1-2 characters down the screen.

Just wondering, is that something easily replaced? Or should I say can that part be found easily? The display still works, just that funny line fooks it up. Any help is appreciated, thanks!

there are companies that can fix that one line sort of thing. Probably cost you like $400 though. Or if you wanted to just replace the screen , well the laptop is pretty old and spare parts cost a lot so i'd figure you're looking at 1000+ for a new screen. You are better off just buying a new laptop

Hey RB
If you plan on using it for the majority of the time with an external display then it's not a bad deal.
If you plan on using it most of the time with the laptop display then I would pass.

Fixing:
It could be possible that a electronic tech shop could repair or replace a small chip and it would be fixed, this could be about a hundred+ for a small chip and labour.(depending on the chip)

It also is possible that it could only be a bad ribbon going to the display or loose connector, then figure about another hundred for that repair.

If the display itself, or an integral display chip on the M.B. is bad then it could be upwards of 1000. to fix and NOT worth it.
