Question about lapping a Celeron 366 Slug. . . .

I have had my old Cel. 366 that does 550 lying around for a few months, and today I decided to lap the slug. I went to the hardware store and got the necessary items (sandpaper @ 220,600,800,1500 grit, glass, etc.) and followed the instructions on every lapping article I could find.

The actual lapping went well. I can see all copper except for a very small (1/6" x 1/6&quot😉 area that still has some nickel on it towards the middle of the CPU. I can see my reflection, and the top of the CPU is very level (I checked by holding a metal straight edge on the surface).

I shouldn't worry about the small area that still has SOME nickel on it, right? It seems like I have a level, CPU that has approximately 90% of the copper exposed, so should I just leave it at that?

The only part that makes me think is if this small area would not sand off, then there is no way that the top of the CPU can be level. But holding up a metal ruler to the surface shows the surface to be relatively flat.

Its not a really big deal, but what would you do?

If there is a bit in the middle that won't come off its because the copper underneath is not level. If your surface is level, scooping out the middle will be worse than leaving it alone.

I would just leave it. I can't imagine you getting any better cooling, by sanding it down any further. However, you could damage the cpu.
