question about Lacie external firewire drive

i should be able to upgrade it right?
i got it for free, it came with a cd burner inside.
i tried to replace it with a dvd burner and nothing happens.

the cd burner worked fine, i switched drives, making sure the dvd drive was also set to master. but nothing happens. the drive tray won't open. the power light on the case just blinks.

i thought the cases were universal and should work with any pata drive.
maybe lacie did something to lock it to a paticular drive?

edit- i just discovered that holding down the power button lets me open and close the drive.
weird...
