Question about Klipsch Promedia 2.1 sets

Trying to help my bro get a speaker set for his computer. Space is his real concern and he definitely can't fit anything bigger than a 2.1 set. He's on an X-Fi Xtreme Music but some really crappy speakers from like 10 years ago and a $60 headset. He likes to listen to music a lot and plays games a fair bit.

Anyways, I came across some old thread about the Klipsch Promedia 2.1 set. When I did some searching (since that deal died), I found the Klipsch Promedia GMX 2.1 A or something like that? Says this one is 14W/channel while the other set was 55W/channel? I don't know much about these things but was wondering if these two sets are "just as good." Also, if anyone can recommend something else instead (keeping in mind space is the main concern, so nothing larger than these), that would be appreciated too. Thanks!

I've only heard the Promedia set and not the GMX set, but I've read about people comparing them in the past. I think there was more talk about the GMX 5.1 set being undesirable mainly due to the connectivity options. As far as sound quality goes, as I understand it the Promedia sets were superior to the GMX sets, but I'm not sure what kind of overall difference we're talking about. The GMX set should still be a very good bet for a small computer speaker set.

As far as the wattage ratings, the subwoofers have a similar wattage rating and for the satellites, if they were the same components and power was the only difference, you'd only be getting about 6dB more output from the satellites to say nothing of the subwoofer, which is probably going to give out first. With all the variables that go into this though, Klipsch gives the GMX set a 2dB increase in maximum output capability vs. the Promedia set, so I wouldn't be too worried about the wattage being a big deal in overall output capability.

As for altervatives... most of the better options are
-more expensive (unless you're paying too much for the GMX set)
-take up more desk space

So... I don't think one of the Klipsch 2.1 sets would be a bad option for price/performance with the space limitations you have.

No problem. There are several other "$100 computer speakers" threads in this area as well as General Hardware that it would be worth searching for to see what other options are out there.
