Question about Jury Duty

I've been summoned for jury duty but i'm a full time student. And the date i've been schedled for is in imeediate conflict with my course schedule. Are students exempt from jury duty? I mean they honestly expect me to cut class to be a juror.

Thanks.

They make people with real jobs "cut" work, so why wouldn't they make your ITT-tech ass do the same? Turnabout is fair play my freunde!

Uh most states have exemptions for full time students, those over 65, and those who are single parents with young children. Well maybe not most, but more than a few do. New York isnt one of them.

I just got jury duty a few months ago. You have to go the first day even if you're a full time student. I just had to go in the day they said, told the judge I was a student and he excused me. Although the judge could say no if he wanted....like if you piss him off or something....

Edit: I'm in California btw. Sucked too, I was stuck being on call my whole spring break. If you're lucky you won't even have to go in.

New York has killed almost all exemptions including being in college. The poster is in New York.

Just hope you never get called for grand jury duty. Its harder to get out of. The Enron Grand Jury is in its 18th or 19th month. Woot at $6 a day for 18 months, thats a whole $3240.

All you need to do is tell the defense attorney during voire dire that you know the dude is guilty, even before hearing evidence. The voices in your head told you so.

Just ask the judge 'is this going to be anything like the Pauly Shore movie?!?!? that guy is HiLaRiOuS!!!" and they will let you go on grounds of insanity... 😀

Just reply that you can't make it due to college exams. I did so in Maryland and got off. Its worth a try.

It probably depends on your location. In my area, I couldn't get an exemption for being in school, but I did manage to call them up and postpone jury duty for several years. 😛 I just asked them to reschedule me to go during a school break. Then I'd just postpone again when I received the next notice. One guy did give me a warning towards the end about not postponing anymore, but then they switched to an automated system, so that was the end of the warnings.

I eventually went to jury duty some time after graduation. Sat all morning, was never called, so I was free to go. Haven't heard from them since.

just like George Carlin says,

"Most people lie to get out of jury duty. You don't have to lie. Tell them you will make an excellent juror because you can spot guilty people just like that!"

We have a scary system in this country ... people are judged by those too stupid to get out of jury duty. 😛 No wonder OJ walked.

Yes.

Especially when they start to threaten you via a letter that is sent by regular mail.

Prove that I received it.

BTW, this is not me, my friend has ingored several letters and now just got threat that he'd receive a fine if he didn't show in 10 days.

Yes if you tell them you're a student and have class, you won't have to attend.

In Texas, if you get Jury duty and are a student you can mail back the Summons with info proving you are a student and you do not have to attend.

Just tell your teacher that you have Jury Duty - they'll understand - stop evading your responsibilities as a US citizen.
