Question about jumping another car with your car

So my roommate asked me this morning if I could give his car a jump later today because his car's battery died I guess. I've never done it before and neither has he. Is there anything I should pay particular attention to or should know before I go and jump another car with mine? I know about connecting the + and -'s but just wanted to know if there is anything I should watch out for so I don't screw up my car doing this.

thanks

Just don't hook positive to negative.

Most new cars have a separate set of posts for jump starting another car.

And, don't let one end of the cable's clamps touch while the other end is connected to a battery. 😉

Attach the POSITIVE cable (the red one, or the one with the red stripe) to the POSITIVE post on the battery of the running car.
Attach the other end of the POSITIVE cable to the POSITIVE post of the dead battery.
Attach the NEGATIVE (the black one) cable to the NEGATIVE post on the battery of the running car (the good battery).
Attach the other end of the NEGATIVE cable to a clean unpainted spot on the engine of the car with the dead battery.
Attempt to start the car with the dead battery. You can rev the engine slightly on the running car while the other car is attempting to start.
Keep both cars running and turn on the head lights of both cars.
Disconnect the cables in the reverse order of how they went on: NEGATIVE cable from engine, NEGATIVE cable from good battery, POSITIVE cable from dead battery, POSITIVE Cable from good battery. (Don't let the cable clamps touch till all are disconnected)
Turn off the headlights
DON'T stop the car with the dead battery. Let it run for a while, preferably at highway speeds to charge the dead battery.

Ok, I am trying not to bust up laughing in the middle of this computer lab right now.

I thought you were going to ask for advice on how to best jump another car with your car.... like driving, hitting a ramp, etc.

yikes! lol. I must be on something today

Watch out for sparks! Those are bad when jumping another car. But cool to watch. I always hit the other ends together just for fun once in a while. Wheeeee.

Another important issue: turn off the stereos of both vehicles. My father-in-law owns a music/car stereo store and a noticible amount of his business comes from people who fried their stereos during a jump start. At least that is what some of his customers say fried the stereos - definately not a scientific study.

thanks for the tips guys. dabuddha...if you see sparks flying in the parking lot tonight, can you come out and give us a hand? or call 911 🙂

I have had alternator diodes blown by jumping someone with the engine running. IF your battery is good you should not need to have the motor running. It is safest to just use the battery and not involve your alternator.

Agreed. You should never have the "good" car running when jumping a non-starter. I don't care what the handyman says.

edit : If the vehicle you are jumping has a battery so dead you would have to have your vehicle running to actually "charge" the battery....you shouldn't be jumping it. The dead battery needs to be charged up properly on a charger. Vehicle charging systems are not really designed with giving life to a dead battery. They are designed for keeping a battery completely charged.

I thought the same thing 😀

If you have an amp or anything hooked up i'd take the fuse out of the power wire when you do it.

hahaha i was too

eh, easiest way to do it is red-red black-black.

I know that the black on the dead car is supposed to go to the metal surface, but its not really a nescessity (i'e done it with red-red black-black 10+ times for friends and coworkers this way, always worked. One of my coworkers always left his lights one. Always)
