Question about job references

Phokus

Lifer
I contacted my old place of work (it was a sales job in the mall) for reference information. I knew my old boss had moved on. The lady at the corporate offices told me that she really couldn't provide me with a reference since my boss left and that you're supposed to keep in contact with your boss for those types of things. Is that really true? I havent really talked to my old bosses in a long time. Should i call them up right now?

You ussually provide specific names as references, not companies. And it's a good idea to contact the people you want to list as references so that you're sure they are willing to provide a reference, and that the contact information is correct.

What she says is true. All she can do is verify your employment. A reference is some one speaking on your behalf, explaining to your potential new employer why your such a great person, how much of a hard worker you are, etc... The woman at your old job doesn't know you from a hole in the wall, and cant give you a reference.

You'll need to contact your old bosses, or co-workers. Also check with the job your interviewing with and see if you can use some personal references in place of professional ones.

Tell them to "reference this" and grab your crotch.

What do you do when they tell you that they want someone more qualified?

Pop an Enzyte & watch the miracle occur!

But only Mr. Thompson is available for interviewing today?

You have really impressed Mr. Thompson with the length and breadth of your experience. In fact, I would not be out of line in saying that your vast experience eclipses anyone that I have ever met. But while we are impressed with the firmness of your resolve, we here at the Lesmo Group do not quite fit the profile of our ideal applicant. Our competitors, Tube Steak Charlie?s and the Toolbox would probably be interested in hiring you though.
