Question about Itanium processors

OutHouse

Lifer
Ive posted this in the "CPU/processors and overclocking" topic. Ive had good responses but what im looking for is this.

Anybody out there using the new processor?

I need to replace one of my Terminal servers running Citrix at work. The Dell Poweredge 2550 comes with the Xeon or Itanium procs. I would like to upgrade to the next generation server and get rid of the Data General POS.

Ive done a lot of research on the web and Im reading where i would need all of my apps to be ported to run on the Itanium 64bit proc and ive also read where my apps will be ok and not need any modifications. This is a $8,000 purchase and I need to be absolutly sure.

I have looked on the anandtech review sites and i dont see any reviews of the Itanium. i could have missed it though.

I would to talk to some people who are using this Proc and get thier imput.

yes it is out

Ok I will post this question in the General hardware. thanks. i hope the mods dont get mad if they want please lock this thread.

ok, but I would not recomend it, Itanium is a test platform for intel, mckinley will be the "official" epic processor. Lacks software support.

Also doesnt it cost helluva lot more than the other machine?

it will cost about 3K more than a the same Dell poweredge with the Xeon procs. not that much for a corporate environment.
