I have a Dell Precision T3500 workstation, and Dell states that non-ECC as well as Unregistered ECC memory are compatible with this system (just not mixed of course).

But Intel's LGA1366 i7 and Xeon processors have an integrated memory controller, correct? So my question is, what if anything could prevent this system from using Registered ECC memory?

The reason I ask is that I want to run 24GB (6x4GB) and non-ECC 4GB modules run close to $200 per. I haven't seen any 4GB Unregistered ECC modules, and 4GB Registered ECC modules run at a hair over $100 per. So, it would be significantly cheaper if I could run Registered ECC.

are you confusing Unbuffered with buffered (UDIMM/RDIMM)?

UDIMM is limited to 1 dimm per channel (3 channels per cpu).

3x4 = 12gb on 1 socket
6x4 = 24gb on 2 socket

moving past that you go to buffered registered dimm which can run in any paired amount (2's or 3's) up to 9 on a 1 socket board or 18 on 2 socket board. keep in mind as you go over 1 dimm per channel you drop from 1333 to 1066. 3 dimm per channel to 800mhz.

rdimm is stupid expensive
