Question about installing XP on multiple computers..

I bought XP a long time ago and installed it on my old dell system fine. Today, I got my new system in and installed XP on it. No problems. It asks me to register and says I only have 30 days to register it. I don't remember but I'm assuming I registered XP when I installed it on my old Dell. Now my question is will I have a problem registering XP again for this computer? I guess my question boils down to whether or not I can install XP on multiple computers on my house using the same disc? Or do they make you buy a separate XP cd for each computer in the house?

do they make you buy a separate XP cd for each computer in the house?

you can purchase a separate license (w/o media here ) through MS, they will give you a new serial and you can activate your second computer. The whole activation thing was to circumvent what you want to do - - run one licensed copy of the OS on more than one machine.

Yikes, they make me pay an extra 190 dollars for the license alone? wtf. I paid 10 dollars to get this from my University. Are you sure there aren't other legal ways? I mean why would it be a crime to install an os you paid for on a new computer you just bought.

it's not a crime to install an OS on a new computer you just bought, unless you do not delete the same serial/activated install from your old computer first (this is according to the MS terms of service). If you can convice the MS customer service rep that you trashed your old comp for a new one and want to install your copy of XP on the new one, they will let you activate the new installation. I am unsure if educational licenses will allow you to transfer the OS to another computer, or if they are limited. Read the Microsoft EULA for your copy, it says what you can and cannot do...legally. ;)

Thanks for the help rocmonster. I'm a little hesitant to tell them I scrapped the other one since the truth is I didn't; my little brother now uses it. Also, I'm sure if I told them I scrapped it, I won't be able to call tech support or anything pertaining to his computer, right? Wouldn't they delete his registration or whatever?
