Question About Installing Volcano 7 and Heat Problems

I bought a new case(Antec SX835II), mobo(Nfs7-S), cpu(tbred-b xp1700+), memory(hyperx 3000), and heatsink(volcano 7). My question is whether the Volcano 7 comes with thermal grease already applied or not. When I got it, it had a peal off sticker on the copper(cpu) side and under the sticker was some black stuff on the copper. Is this thermal grease?? I've only ever seen white thermal grease.

Another thing that concerns me is that I put the system together and my t-bred 1700+ b is running around 45C with no load. That's with default speed and voltage. Seems very high to me. I tried cranking the FSP to 150 MHz and the system wouldn't even post. What gives?? Any help here? I thought the Volcano 7 was supposed to be somewhat effective...

TIA

Clean that blck stuff off with some nail polish or alcohol. Get some real thermal grease, artic silver 3. Apply a thin amount and make sure cooler is mounted squarely.

that pad is a thermal pad... it's supposed to work, but thermal grease of arctic silver works better... just scrap it off and put some thermal goop on.. you can even get "thermal grease" from radio shack for a dollar or two

Well, I realized my memory settings were too aggressive for going to 150 FSB. I tuned the memory down and was able to get the processor up to 2.2 Ghz with the current cooling solution.

At 2.2 G's, I noticed the system wasn't totally stable so I tried to tune down the settings and the computer locked up while the bios was saving. Now the board won't boot at all, even after trying the cmos clear jumper. Woohoo, gonna have to buy a savior kit or use another mobo to flash the bios back onto the eeprom...

These Nforce2 boards are a bit tricky, eh??

I had just started messing around, so everything was default except:

1) FSB:MEMORY was 5:4 so I could push the FSB without worrying about memory
2) I think I had the memory timings set to aggressive
3) The CPU multiplier is 11.0x
4) I cranked the FSB to 200 MHz and it posted at 2.2 GHz

On the next bios save, my system hung and I was SOL. Gonna try a Hot Swap reflash of the bios chip in another mobo I have sitting around tonight...If that don't work, it looks like I'll be ordering from excaliburPC.com again...
