Question about installing a motherboard

So thanks to everyone here on the forums, I put together a nice little list of components and finally bought them all. The last of them were delivered today, so I went to work putting the PC together.

There's a problem, though - sometimes it won't turn on for more than a second, sometimes it won't turn on at all when I push the power button, and it has never stayed on for more than 30 minutes. This means I can't install windows.

My mobo is a gigabyte ga-p35-ds3r v2.1. I googled around, and two common suggestions were to up the RAM voltage and to install the newest bios. Did both of those, still no dice.

The obvious culprit is the power supply, an antec earthwatts 500. I guess I'll probably have to return it to Fry's, but it was part of their case+psu deal, and there's no friggin way I'm going to pay to ship a 25lb case back to california!

So it dawned on me - another thing that I might have done wrong that could be causing all this. My motherboard is screwed directly in to the case - should it be on risers or something? Is it possible that the bottom of the mobo being in contact with the metal case is the root of the problem? Or am I just nuts, and do I need to RMA the power supply?

Thanks.

Absolutely. It's shorting out.

However, that doesn't explain how you installed a video card and plugged in your kb/mouse cables...the board should have been out of alignment with the rear of the case.

What's the solution, then? How can I make it not touch the case? It's lined up fine with the ports in the back...not out of alignment, i dont think

Think of it this way...before the mobo goes into the case, you screw in a series of brass standoffs that look like this on to the mobo tray. The mobo screws into these standoffs, providing a bit of room between the mobo and the mobo tray.

Did you screw in those standoffs before installing the mobo?

Glad to hear it. Don't forget to set the RAM voltage back to default...tweak that kind of stuff after you finish.
