Google can tell you the difference. For photo's laser is not the way to go.
There are dedicated photo printers that usually just print 4x6 or 5x7 sizes or you can get a good ink printer that also does photos. Canon, HP and Epson make photo printers in all price ranges.

photos =inkjet
still expensive, esp with suggested company inks. its cheaper and better to just get the stuff printed at the local store. you can just upload the pics to their online site, whether its walagreens walmart costco or wherever.

lasers got better text quality

I think another difference is that laser prints do not smear while inkjet prints do.

It's been a long while since the better inkjet brands have had a significant smearing problem once the ink has dried.

Let's say you print a page of text with a laser and one with an inkjet. Then, use a yellow highlighter to highlight a line on each page.
Will the two pages look the same?

Answer: NO :)
Text will be smeared on inkjet printed paper.

Depends on the hi-liter you use. Some are stated to work well with inkjet prints. If you want something hi-lited, hi-lite it before you print it out. That's what a color printer is for...

If you want good, long-lasting, photo prints, then have Costco or some other professional printing service make them. It'll be cheaper and much longer lasting. Inkjet prints fade pretty quickly.

This wasn't really the point. Someone claimed that inkjet printers did not smear and were the same as laser printers in that respect. I just wanted to bring it to their attention that they were not exactly the same.

Lasers are better for text with spot color graphics, inkjet is better for photo printing.

You can get a Canon iP6000D for under $100. shipped from BeachCamera.com. It is a 6-color photo printer that uses the BCI-6 ink tanks, clones of which can be had for as low a $1. each. They are separate passive ink tanks for each color that can easily be refilled to save even more. Very reasonably priced prints if you can find good prices on decent paper. I found some Kodak EveryDay soft-gloss 4x6" for 7 cents a sheet (100 sheet packs). Those make for nice prints.

Some big box stores are also blowing out the iP6600 (which superceded the iP6000D) for about $90.AR as the iP6700 is already on the shelves. These also have separate tanks but they are chipped. Currently you have to move the chips from the OEM tanks to the clone tanks and the tanks are considerably more expensive. Given the time to mature in the market that the 6 series tanks have had, the price will get into the same ball park for the chipless clones. And clone chips are supposed to be "on the way".
