Question About Image Persistence

This is the monitor that I'm looking at buying.

NEC 20WMGX2

I was reading some of the Newegg reviews and some have mentioned image persistence as a problem, the image staying on the screen a few seconds after you close a window.

Has anyone had any problems with this monitor and Image Persistence? Does anyone have an LCD that has Image Persistence and if so does it really bother you that much?

Mine has none that I can tell, and any damage can usually be reversed by turning the display off for the period of time the image was static. Most of the time that isn't a problem. If WinXP's taskbar is displayed 9 hours a day, the monitor will be off when you sleep (generally 8 hours). Even then, I haven't seen anything at all that needed to be reversed on my unit. It would be bothersome but is only an issue for very few who need static images on their LCDs for prolonged periods of time. I suggest turning it off when you're not using it (instead of letting Windows do that for you after ~30 mins or instead of using a screensaver).

Thanks. I do normally use my screensaver. I'm wondering though, is it a characteristic of this one type of monitor or does it affect others as well? I have a 17" Hitachi and haven't seen it and have never heard of it until I started looking at that monitor.

Yes, other monitors can get it. I have heard it more on S-IPS types of panels than any other type. The Dell 2005FPW (S-IPS) had some problems with it. By and large, it is not an issue for LCDs and there are very few instances compared to Plasma.

I noticed this yesterday on mine. I had a windowed browser open for only about an hour - maybe less. I was going to leave my computer, so I forced the screen saver (the flying window with black background.) With the screen saver running, something caught my eye and I looked at the top of screen and I could see the graphics of the minimize, full, close example/ '_ [ ] X ' left by the top right corner of the windowed browser.

This concerns me because the warranty states that pro-long use causing image persistence voids the warranty. So if it causes image persistence in less than an hour, is that voiding the warranty? I doubt it but that wording is scary.

From that article, overdrive process causing it, it seems. So since the NEC, using an IPS screen likely relies more on overdrive to get fast response, it is more prone?
