I'm looking at putting together an inexpensive system for a relative of mine. The intel 810 chipset has onboard sound & video. I have heard that the onboard video is not good for much more than web surfing. My question is: If I put my old Voodoo2 accererator in a system like this, will it turn off the onboard stuff (and the performance hit with it)during 3d games?

I have a Dell based on the i810 with oboard video and sound. I just threw in another PCI card (I don't think i810 boards have an open AGP slot) but use the onboard i810 for a second display in Win98/2K. I made the other adapter (S3 Virge, yuck - but I have no other dual display choice) primary in BIOS. The system also shipped with a SoundBlaster AudioPCI card, so the onboard sound was already disabled in BIOS.

I added a Voodoo 2 card to a Soyo SY7lWM with the Intel 810 chipset and it worked fine. The pass through cable connects the onboard 2D video to the Voodoo 2 which then takes over for all 3d renderings. It worked pretty well, but I have since replaced it with a Voodoo 3 3000 PCI card, which automatically disables the AGP on board video when installed. Some boards have a jumper to disable the onboard video and others have a BIOS setting to do the same thing. The soyo BIOS has an option for detect video as PCI, then AGP so it automatically "looks for" a PCI card to use first, then defaults to the onboard AGP if no PCI card is found. Check with the manual for the board your friend has.
