alright, one of my friend plays BF4 but says he lags now with is MSI H55M-P31 with a core i3. His video card is an amd 6850. he got 8Gbs of ram. (thats all he does with the computer)

He wants to upgrade, idk his budget for now but, should he changed the mobo and go with haswell and a core i3-i5?

idk the resolution he plays with either (i could ask) so i'm not sure the video card is the problem here.

What you guys think he should do?

I think that both the CPU and GPU are bottlenecks. BF4 loves cores, the i3 is only really a dual-core, it can't handle BF4. The GPU might be alright, if he plays at 1280x1024 or 1366x768, but for 1080P gaming with BF4, I would recommend a R9 280x at a minimum.

understood, but, what should he get now ? haswell with core i5 ? and about the video card, what is the equivalent of a 7850-70 in the R family ?

Haswell first, since a better GPU will simply be cpu limited anyways.

GTX 660 or 7850 are both good sub $200 options.

Otherwise you can get a 7850 and wait for the Mantle patch to see if a cpu upgrade is even needed. This option assumes he doesn't play any other game.

is the i3 running at stock speed or overclocked?

what about the graphics settings? the Alpha (or beta?) was fine on an i3 with a 5850 at medium settings when I tested.

5850 is a lil bit better than a 6850. i asked him and he plays at 1920x1080 at minimum settings, the i3 is not OC at all, he knows nothing about that.

so would a 7850 helps or new mobo + core i5 or both?

he will go with the less expensive way.

maybe vishera 8320 +amd 970 chipset could be an option too.

Im running an i5-3570k and a 270x on 1050p and have all settings ultra in 64 player maps and dont dip below 30 fps

overclocking should a good option, if he is using a 530, the default clock is 2.93GHz, it's possible to increase that by 500-1000MHz without much trouble

as for a proper upgrade, I think going for both CPU (and MB) + VGA at the same time is the way to go, so it's up to him, how much is he willing to invest

I would say an i5 4570+H81 board + R9 270x would be a good option, at around $450 going by newegg prices.

the 8320 should also be good for this game, but considering all of the platform and performance characteristics and the lack of interest for overclock, I would give preference for the I5,

if you can find a 7850 2GB for a decent price it can be a good option, but look for the R9 270 (X and non X), I think prices a really close.

well, for now he decided to go for an Asus R9 270 OC, and see what it changes. hoping to get a few fps more. If not sufficient, he will upgrade mobo and cpu.

hmm, what about chipsets, like 970, 990x ? how do they compared to H81 ?

BF4 likes Cores. If he's on a budget, and his PSU is solid, Look at a FX-6350 or FX-8350 (Since he doesn't O/C) with a 970 chipset and a R9 270 or 7870.

A i5-4570 + H81/B85 Mobo would be a good option too.

990x can be used for crossfire, H81 is not made for that, also the 900s have more sata/usb ports, but imo H81 have enough,

but you are talking about different platform so there is no point in comparing just the chipsets, and there is basically no effect from the chipset on gaming performance anyway, so I'm just recommending H81 based on the low price...
and no need for more I/O I think.

the only test (with both CPUs) I was able to find shows the 4570 outperforming the 8350

Ridiculous recommendations...

They dont show a lynnfield i7-8xx on this chart but clearly you can get the majority of the performance of a haswell i5 on the 1156 platform. Look how slow that i3 is compared to even an i5-760. Just go on ebay and get an i7-8xx.

why ridiculous? if he is going to buy new parts going with the 4570 + cheap MB sounds like a good one in my view, and the 8320 would also bring nice gains, but yes, if he already have a 1156 MB it would be a cheaper route to buy an i5 or i7 for that platform

Yeap, drop an I7 870 in :) Intel Core i7-870 Processor 2.93GHZ 8M Cache SLBJG; 4 Cores, 8 threads
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Intel-i7-87...156-/271367776948?pt=CPUs&hash=item3f2ec7aab4

It's a nice CPU, and it being soldered is nice, but does have drawbacks. In core heavy games (like maxing all 8 threads) it is a good bit slower than ivy. Gooood bit. It smashes compute though, I've seen only ~5% difference in ivy in F@H. If he can he should go 875k though. That allows 1600 RAM and it can easily hit 4.3 with a good cooler. Even the locked 870 hits ~4.1 with bins and BCLK overclocking. The only game I have seen it struggle with is beamNG.drive. It maxes minecraft extreme render distance at 30fps with a 7770. It needs a good cooler though, as the stock 80mm 4500rpm HSF needs 75% power to keep 65c cores during gaming. 100% load maxes the fan and still hits 80c. A t40/212 class cooler is fine.

It's a 4 year old EOL'd product. Get one for $60 on ebay.

cheapest 870 on ebay is $175 for me

not worth the money imo

BUT, the 860 can be found for around $100-115, which is not to bad, almost half the price of the 4570, it's slower but it should be fast enough to have some fun on BF4 and be a decent upgrade from the i3
