I was wondering if HP/Compaq plan to use a better GPU in their laptops anytime soon, the MX440 doesnt appeal much but I like their laptops as DTR and I dont mind the weight.

Also, I configured a Compaq with AMD64 3700+ and a whole lot of goodies and was about to order it when I heard that they have a student/ academic discount. I am a student and staff at my college and I was wondering if I should order as a staff member or as a student? Anyone know how much discount it is?

On the HP website, your model is stated as a coming soon. How did you get your hands on it? I am interested in a reasonably priced AMD64 system and your's is an expensive P4 :(

No, I just checked, and it is not listed as coming soon.

However, it is more expensive than the nc6000 at least for the starting price, and hasn't won lots of acclaim (while the nc6000 has). Both of these machines come with the MR 9600. The nc6000:

$1360 to start is not unreasonably priced for a machine of this caliber, but if you're on a budget you're on a budget.

There are also other Compaq/HP machines that offer significantly better graphics than what you claim. I don't know where you got this mistaken notion.

Whoa, it was never the cream of the crop. It's based on the GeForce 4 MX, which when released nobody was impressed. Now that it's years old, it's about the poorest hardware card you can get. I would prefer Intel Xtreme graphics over the 440go.

The NC6000 and NC8000 are pretty much the same machine except mine has a better screen on it and can have more video memory (128MB max compared to 64MB max, mine only came with 64 though). I didn't care about the cost, my boss paid for it :)

I've had my machine about a year now.

The screen and graphics are nicer. It is a bit heavier, though, and the battery life isn't as good on the nc8000-- or rather, it's not quite as stellar as that of the nc6000. I think they're both very nice machines; I wasn't meaning to say bad stuff about the nc8000. I think the nc6000 has gotten more notice just because it's a little better suited to travelling.

Tell me about it. I've not had to use it on business trips until recently and my shoulders can tell the difference between it and my featherweight-but-very-old Dell Latitude CSx500. It's probably due to the bigger screen. The battery life isn't bad, but using the wireless really kills it. I'm lucky to get about 2-2.5 hours out of it. Not as good as my slightly older Dell Latitude C840 which had two batteries and got around 4.5 hours. Talk about heavy though...
