Well, recently bought a set of 50' panasonic plasma, LG blue-ray and Onkyo Receiver with 5 channel speakers. We only watch tv program from antenna...no cable here, so I hope that provides enough info for my questions below:

The blue-ray player and TV are connected via HDMI, but the sound goes from blue-ray player to Onkyo Receiver via Analog (red, white) wire....is this the right method to set up? We'd like to turn off the built-in TV speaker and rely on the external 5 channel speakers only, but we also like to keep everything digital. Please keep in mind, only one HDMI out of the back of the blue-ray player.

Second, I ran the antenna to the TV directly...but for some reason, the sound doesn't come out of external speakers, it only comes out of bult-in TV speaker, and I haven't found a way for the TV to recognize the external speakers (the built-in Viera Link is a joke)...any tip for accomplishing this?

Finally, I'd like to keep the setup neat and simple, meaning minimal wires and one remote control only. But which? The TVs, blue-rays or receiver's?

Thanks much!

We really need to know what TV/Blu-ray/Onkyo receiver models you have as it'd make it easier for us to be able to know what each component is capable of doing.

Ideally you should hook up your Blu-ray player to your Onkyo receiver via HDMI and let it pull the audio out and send a HDMI cable going to your TV from the receiver for video. Another way is to get an Optical Toslink cable for sound and hook your blu-ray player up to your receiver up that way and run HDMI directly to the tv from blu-ray player. Also that's the way you're going to need to get sound out from your tv, your tv should have Optical out and connect that to your receiver for sound.

As was said above, you don't need the analog wires at all..the HDMI will take care of all your video and audio needs digitally.

Ok as stated. Single HDMI out from bluray into receiver. HDMI from receiver to tv. Thats the bluray portion.

For the tv to output to the receiver you will need to use the digital out. (toslink cable) and plug into your receiver that way. Then you have to go into the receiver usually and set tv to use the digital in slot you plugged into. Then the picture will come into the tv, audio will go from the tv to the receiver and output in nice 5.1. Hope that makes sense its early lol

From TV->receiver...I don't have a toslink cable, can I udr HDMI cable instead? I mean it's supposed to handle video AND audio, right?

There should be an option in your tv somewhere to use external speaker. If you receiver have hdmi input then you can connect everything to your receiver. Look at what kind of audio out your tv have. Use that to connect to the receiver. unless your tv/receiver support audio return channel, you will need to connect a toslink from your tv to receiver.

Buy one. The "Digital Audio Out" optical jack on the back of your Panny is the only sound output.

Thats what i meant :) Plug it into the digital audio out slot. Then on your receiver you will have to make sure that particular mode is set to use the input digital audio slot you plug it into (on the receiver) My rmeote has "TV" so i just ha dot go in and set it to use Digital Audio Input 1 for audio
