I live in Maryland (east coast). I have a house built in 1974 it's a townhome end-unit.

I noitce the exterior walls are well insulated but the basement ceiling underneath the 1st floor isn't. Also the attic ceiling isn't as well.

I was curious would it be worth wild to insulate my basement ceiling. The basement is an unconditioned space. It's cold there in the winter but would it make much of any difference insulating there. It's a 1,200 sq ft home with about 400 or so square feet per floor including the basement.

What R value should I get???

Also I was told it isn't a good idea to insulate my attic ceiling. It's also an unconditioned space?

You should blow cellulose or fiberglas into your attic.

It may be beneficial to insulate your floor, especially if you notice that it gets cold in the winter.

You want insulation in the attic's floor, but not the attic's celing (the underside of the roof). The attic is a buffer zone between the different temperatures of the house and outside. If you insulate the attic all around the temperature can't change easily enough and you get humidity problems
