Question about health insurance.

Okay, so if you have health insurance and you get really sick with something that requires a lot of on going, expensive treatment (cancer for example) wouldn't it be in your insurance company's best interests to just drop you as a client or raise your rate so much you can't be with them? Then what happens?

What if you get so sick you have to leave your job thus discontinuing your health insurance?

Or if you are sick or injured or disabled without insurance then how the heck do you even get someone to insure you?

Does this kind of stuff happen or are there laws to stop this from happening?
