Question about headset with mic and speakers

I am using a set of logitech x-530 speakers and it has a single headphone jack. I have a headset that has a mic built in and wanted to know if I can plug that headset into the speakers, should the mic on the headset work? I have tried it but it doesn't. But not sure if it's supposed to or not. The headset has a single 3.5mm connector but also comes with a y splitter.

The microphone pin layout for combined 3.5mm varies based on device. The combined stereo/mic are usually used on mobile phones/tablets. Most PC desktops use separate inputs for microphones.
