Question about headphones

I have a really good set of headphones. They're only a little over a year old. They are those Sony ones that clip on your ears. They sound excellent and have good bass with my Discman. However, now I have them plugged into the speaker output on the back of my computer. I'm listening to mp3s and they sound like crap. It's almost like the "old record player sound" with very little bass. Do I have a setting wrong or what?

Depending on your sound card, your volume controls may allow you to change some advanced options. Or your soundcard may be terrible.

You could also try adjusting the equalizer in Winamp, assuming you have it.

What bitrate are the mp3's? If they are 96kbps they are the culprit. Also you should have a graphic ezualizer on the program you are using to play them back, check to see if you do, then set the bass up higher if you want it higher.

I do use WinAmp, but I have onboard sound. That could be the problem since onboard sound is worse than most sound cards. The mp3s I play have bit rates ranging from 128 to 192, so I know it is not the quality of the mp3s.

Goto Control Panel, Sound and Multimedia, on the Audio tab, under Playback Device, Advanced, at the bottom, under Speaker Setup, choose Headphones.

That should adjust the output level for a pair of headphones.
