So, I got an ATI HD2600 Pro, the non-HDMI version though (got it from friend at work for cheap) and on the box is states...HDMI Video 5.1 Audio. My question is:

If I buy the HDMI/DVI adapter...is that going to permit sound through like it was HDMI->HDMI??? I'm wanting to eliminate the need for the old sound card thats in it and the HDMI one cable solution would be perfect.

This box will be used for movie viewing (DVD's both ripped and on disc) and also HDTV shows. I just wanted to know before I waste $7 on a cable that I might not even be able to use.

Also...I'm in need of a dvd shelf but I don't want to buy a crappy one that's going to warp w/in a year. I don't really want to spend more than $100 on it and need it to hold at least 65 or so...ideas are definitely welcome in this area as we are limited with furniture stores around here.

Thanks!

as far as i know, dvi cannot transmit audio and will not work for sound. i think you'll have to stick with your soundcard.

ATI

Non-ATI

It's the pinout from ATI that you need. It's a proprietary mapping so I don't think you can just get something from someone else.

Yea, that's what I was thinking. I remember the S-Video on ATI is proprietary as well...stupid-ness! ^_^

Thanks for the help guys!

it's a proprietary adpater because DVI spec doesn't include sound at all.

a regular DVI-->HDMI adapter or cable will work but you won't get sound...
