question about hat sizes

i bought a fitted hat today and now that i got it home and bent the rim a little it began to feel too tight. Its size is 7 1/8....i looked at my other fitted hat which is 3 years old and that one is 7 3/8 and that one even feels tight at times, but is ok. do hats shrink in time? i would have thought they would stretch out. Now i am thinking of returning my new hat and getting a 7 1/4 even though it felt really big when i tried it on.

are hat sizes just extremely inaccurate or do hats shrink or get larger over time?

Never had a hat shrink on me. Some do get bigger with use. I find sizes are fairly uniform. A haircut can affect the fit.

Your head is getting bigger! Seriously, hat sizes are probably like sizes on everything else, depends on the manufacturer.

plus depending on what they are made of, if they get wet while you are wearing them, they will shrink to fit sometimes. Plus the amount of hair you have will definitely affect how a hat fits. I have a couple of adjustables that I have to let out a two notches when I need a haircut, compared to when it's shorter
