So I am putting together a build for a friend of mine, and I think we have it pretty well sorted out: http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2370238. The only part I am quandaring is the CPU. He is a light user, but wants it to last, and doesn't want to spend a lot of money.

So my main question is: What is the Intel HD Graphics I am seeing referred to on the new Haswell Pentiums?

I was going to get him an i3 with the HD 4400, but if I can save him some money by not buying something he doesn't need, I'll just get the Pentium. If he plays any games at all, they will be Flash based.

Appreciate any input.

It is labelled as "intel HD graphics" with no nomenclature. I'd assume that means SB iGPU graphics, but I am not sure. As to whether it works for your friend, ::shrug::. I'd say it depends entirely on what he's doing. Windows 2D stuff is hardly demanding and even older era iGPUs did that just fine. The only issue was gaming, although flash based games should not be an issue.

That said. I would just get the i3. For the usage you describe I know HD4400 would be more than he needs. "Intel HD graphics"?? I'm not so sure on that one. I would think so, but ARK isn't forthcoming on what graphics are exactly being used in the Haswell pentiums.

Wanting it to last, I would also just get the i3, regardless of what IGP the Pentiums have. For light use, it performs like it really is a quad. A Haswell i3 with an SSD will make for a rather kickass web/office box, and not half bad at HTPC.

Thanks guys. In the long run, there really isn't a good reason to cut corners here I guess. The money diff really isn't that much.
