Question about hard drive noise

I have two Maxtor hard drives that are different models... both 60 gig varieties...

i've noticed that one is whisper silent and the other one makes a high pitch noise when it runs (not when it's accessing but ALL the time)...

do you think that the one making the noise is possibly bad? i've had it running for months and it has only been within the past 2 months that i've noticed the noises...

no bad sectors on the drive or anything.. just a high pitch noise...

suggestions?

Just my 2c.

If it's a constant high-pitched whine, that's normal. My Maxtors do that as well. If diagnostics report everything as a-okay, I wouldn't worry about it.

(As a sidenote, Maxtor does allow you to RMA a hard drive because of excessive noise, so if it's really bothering you, you can go that route... though you could just end up with another whiny drive, except it's refurbished.)

Hard drives tend to develop this characteristic over time. I would bet it's just a matter of time before your second unit exhibits the same noise pattern.
