How does wikipedia.org get to be on the first page of search results on almost any word I type that's in its database?

You have got to be kidding me. I was getting ready to post the exact same question! no bull.

Anyhow, I really have no idea. I don't really know how search engines work but it does seem like wiki is always up there in the top 5 on whatever I search.

Either the CEO's are sleeping together, or Wiki pays a lot to show up on the first page or first result :p.

maybe it's just that popular ;)

I didn't notice that because I usually append "wiki" to the end of my queries anyway. for non-controversial subjects it's a very nice way to quickly get some substantial information

I had an older friend who writes websites for people. He was bragging once how sites he made were always high up in the search results. Then Google got big and all his ranks were much worse. Google taking how many people link something into account is really a different way to go about things. Doesn't surprise me that a reference site gets ranked highly that way, though. I have a lot of links to Wikipedia on my sites because I like to link terms that people might be unfamiliar with.
