So....i've got my macbook...and i bought a 7200rpm drivfe with some more space. I dont know much about backing up all the ****** on my mac so i just wana copy everything over...my current plan is to slap the hdd in my USB notebook sata->USB2 enclosure and use ghost under DOS or windows and make a backup of the entire drive...then when i get the new one just dump the image on there and see what happens...think it will work? better alternative? thanks

EDIT: Mods...sorry i put in OT...click wrong forum and didnt look >_<

IIRC Ghost would work if the drives are of the same capacity?

There's a Mac app you could look up called Carbon Copy Cloner (I think).

Check OSX's built-in desk utility. You can clone the OS HD over to the new HD, then set the new HD as the boot HD. Or in your case, switch the HDs after the clone process.

i tired the built in disk manager...wasnt much help....carbon copy is running now...ill see how it goes...i dlded super super...will tyr that if it CC doesnt work...thanks for the help! 🙂

i got it working...seemes to be cloned perfectly...but for some reason it runs a little slow...but every time i restart it get faster? lol i have no idea...is there a way to defrag in OSX?

I think there are some third party disk tools.

Is the drive really fragmented?

i dunno....i guess ? 😵 it just doesnt seem to be running as fast as it should...especially for a 7200rpm....

Find out. 😛

How fast should it be running, and how fast is it currently running?

Sounds odd. Maybe Spotlight was rebuilding its index?

I'm pretty sure HFS+ is like the typical (modern) UNIX filesystem. Unless you're doing something extremely crazy, no defrag necessary. Certainly not on a "young" FS.
