Question about getting KTFO

When you get punched square in the jaw and are knocked loony, is it because your brain was had a really hard impact? Or are there other reasons why you just seem to not know where you are?

I went to a MMA event last night and I saw a guy get KTFO and when he went down he just didn't know where the hell he was. He even didn't seem to know where he was when he was standing up.

If there is a medical term for this besides concussion (sp?), can anyone explain it?
