Question about getting cheap cell phones online with cheap service

My contract with T-mobile has ended and my phone is really old. I want to get a new family service plan with Cingular. However, I want to get a cheap, good phone online, like from Amazon. The problem is, I think, that Amazon won't let you transfer phone numbers if you want the discounts. Is there anywhere I can keep my number and still get a good phone? I know can do it directly through Cingular, but all their free/cheap phones suck.

Aren't most phones free these days? The k610i I'm getting is free and comes with a free Nintendo DS.

Problem with Amazon cell phone deals is that they're only good for the first phone - with a family plan it's not so good.

I was looking at the Sony W810i for example. The rebate only works for the first phone, but I can still get 2 others for $24.99. That means I only pay about $50 for 3 phones and the price for a family plan. At least, that's what happens when I add all that stuff to the cart.
