My question is i was wondering if gateway tweeks their PS like Dell does so you have to buy one of thiers or can he just buy any PS he wants like an Antec 480. If he cant no prob it just meand we have to change out the Mobo and the PS at the same time.

1) Dell stopped doing that about 3 years ago. Please don't spread this rumor anymore.
2) Power supplies used by Gateway, Dell, etc are generally underrated - a 200W supply will probably safely go significanly above 200W.
3) Power supples not in Dell type machines are generaly overrated - a 300W supply will probably not be able to give 300W.

But to answer your question I don't know if Gateway has special power supplies - but I doubt it.

thanks for the help.

I didnt know that Dell had changed their PS. Last i heard they didnt. sorry about that.

That's good, 'cuz that was a real pain when I had tried to change the mb on my old Dell a few years ago. Do they still do that thing where they break the board into two parts? That was also a pain.

Depends on which Gateway model you're talking about. We had an older model (around 466 MHz Celeron) Gateway at my workplace that had the power supply fail and we had to get a new one from Gateway because the size of it was so small that you couldn't just buy a generic power supply and put it right back in.
