question about formatting

every time i format my computer and reinstall windows i get this problem so pls help me out. after doing all the reinstalling procedures and finally getting into windows, on boot up it gives me a choice for which OS i want to use...all of them show windows xp professional and now after formatting a couple times there are 3 choices, but all windows xp professional! when i choose the top one it boots into windows, and if i choose another one it just gives me some error....how can i get rid of the choices? i know that there is a setting under the My Computer -> properties, but i want to get rid of all the choices except for the first one. Anyone have a clue? Thanks!

How are you formatting? It should be wiping XP whenever you format.

You should put the XP CD in the drive and boot off of it. Then format from there if you haven't been.

There is a file you can edit to remove all those XP choices. I forgot which one though. I'll try looking it up for you.

I find it best to delete then recreate your partitions before formatting!
btw the file you're looking for is boot.ini
