Question about formatting a new makeshift external HD

I jumped on a $90 400gb seagate deal with the intention of making it into a portable external drive, and bought an enclosure (not at that price or from compusa, of course) for it.

My question is: how do I format it? Can I just stick the drive into the enclosure, turn it on, and format it through explorer? Or is there a better way?

You can use DOS, use this code: driveletter:\format

You can do it through windows. Right-click on the drive in my computer and click format.

I personally like doing it through DOS.
