Question about formatting 360 hdd

Stupid question, but does formatting the 360 hdd just return it to factory default? I bought a used 360 and just want to get all the junk off of it, but just want to make sure there's nothing on it that's required to run it or anything.

the dashboard is stored on the system flash itself, not the hard drive. Formatting the HD will only delete stuff like saves, demos, videos, ect, ect. Thats all the HD is used for. So yeah it will take it back to factory settings.

I think you will lose Hexic, which came pre installed on the HDD. Not sure if you can get it back after that.

How would you format it anyway? Take it out and use a computer? If so then the OS would be lost and not retreivable. Just delete all the stuff via dashboard and start from fresh.
