The light in the range in my dad's kitchen recently went out (flourescent tube, maybe 18", 22" long. He bought a replacement light for it, but it doesn't work in the range - installed correctly, but it doesn't light up - both ends glow, a little bit - a deep yellow, not the white that you'd expect.

I'm thinking the wattage on the replacement bulb was too low. Only problem is, the old bulb doesn't say exactly what wattage it is. Any thoughts?

Bulbs of the same length are the same wattage.
It could be a defective bulb, or his ballast starter is too old to fire it up for some reason.
You could try playing with the switch. like holding it in a few seconds before releasing... or constant on offs...

Normally, I would've just tried another bulb - basic troubleshooting, no? But he has two new bulbs, tried both of those. I'll try the on-off thing.

ballasts are meant to die. I can't tell you how many we end up replacing at kmart.
