i have a generic firewire cable - one end is the regular size 6 pin, the other is the smaller 4 pin end (the iLink end, for those that use that term). i'm trying to use the firewire cable (6 pin connected to iPOD, 4 pin connected to computer) to charge the iPOD, but it's not working. is this because i need a cable where both ends are 6 pin? (i.e. are the 2 missing pins the ones that provide the power for recharging)???

Yes, the two missing pins are for power.

6 pins = powered FireWire, 4 pins = unpowered FireWire.
