Question about fans.

I have a computer that sometimes has noisy fans when booting up. I'm wondering in order to find out which fan is causing the problem, is it ok to push on say the CPU fan until it stops spinning to eliminate it as the problem? Or is doing that bad for the fan?
 
It's fine... gently push on the center of the fan until it stops. or just disconnect its power connector.
 
Many times it's the PSU fan (but the Northbridge fans on some Abit and some vid cards are notoriously shoddy). IAC I wouldn't manually brake the fans. Pull the power connectors one at a time. Do the CPU fan first before it has time to get fully heated up. Practice a few times with the CPU fan connector while the machine is off so there won't be any delay in getting the connector back on.

Another option is to use a mechanic's contact stethoscope. With one of those you can detect which fan is bad even if it isn't making an uproar at the time.
