Question about fans.

Hi all,

Right now I'm using a silen-x 120mm fan on a Xp120 HS. I thought my setup was good and all. However, looking around on the forum I see a lot of poeple seem to dislike the silen-x fans and I was wondering why? The Airflow seems to be good, and the fan is quite quiet (Rated at 14db). Am I missing something here? Should I have bought something else? I need to add a few more fans to my setup and am wondering if I should be looking for something besides Silen-X now.

Silenx lie badly about the noise levels, they also have been doing then AEG viral marketing thing on bulletin boards for years.

They are mediocre fans, much better options are availible, for example: Yate loon and Nexus and in the same price range there are still better quality fans out there (akasa are good).

120mm panaflo fans usually come in the 120 x38 variety. If you are happy with your silenx, then you will most likely have to run any of the panaflos at a lower speed. However, the panaflos should offer better cooling.

I would need 3 120MM fans in my setup
I see you live in or around Toronto. You should check out the RedFlagDeals.com forums and see if anybody's selling good fans - I got my 120mm Yate Loon from a local trader there. The fans BFC sells are very expensive.

If you're willing to buy from an online Canadian store, try NCIX[.com]. They have a decent selection of fans - specifically the Nexus, CoolerMaster, and Scythe S-FLEX fans.

Wait a sec, you're in Canada? Find some GlacialTech SilentBlades then. Awesomely awesome fans, pretty much inaudible and still move 40+ CFM. Last long too, I got a pair running without a hiccup here for a couple years now.

Ive never heard of glacialtech. Where can I find those? As for the other suggestions, I can get coolermaster through distirbution here in Quebec, but I was not convinced taht the quality of the product was that geat considering how cheap they are. The Panaflo's are not that expensive at wholesale and I had read that those were some of the best fans out there.

Panaflos are an industrial quality fan, they are used in many mission critical applications such as servers, and medical equipment; they are definitely some of the best fans you can get.

Another good option would be the triple blade Deltas.

The 1200RPM CoolerMasters are actually pretty silent, so I read.

If so, they're probably the best deal (in Canada?) as far as quiet 120mm fans go.

How loud would most people say is too loud? I was thinking that 30db should be my cuttoff for the fans I am looking at. Does that sounds about right for a quiet setup?

Completely up to you, and as soon as you make the computer quieter you notice the other noises it makes. One thing is that it's very easy to over estimate how much airflow you need.
