Question about F@H

I just started crunching for F@H, I was wondering how I make sure that I'm crunching using ATI Stream (HD 3450). I have a Q9650, and looking at task manager, all processors are not close to being maxed out. In the configuration, I set the cpu usage to 100%. Should I set the core priority to slightly higher from Lowest possible?

Hello tontod 🙂

At the bottom of the F@H client download is a link for High Performance clients.

What you need are SMP and GPU clients. The SMP client uses four threads so it should be kept at its default lowest priority. You should run the GPU client at A Little Higher priority.

Thanks, I'm assuming I want to downoad one of these:

Oh, so I have to download 2 clients, one for the GPU, the other for the SMP?

Ok, I downloaded both, for the CPU client, I set it to use the lowest priority, for the GPU I set it to use Slightly Higher. However, when I move my mouse over the GPU client icon in the systray, it says 0/0. Am I missing something here? However, on the viewer for the GPU, it is processing WU's, I see the graphics.

Ok, I need help with the CPU client. I followed the readme, ran the install.bat, I got the 2 lines :

If you see this twice, MPI is working
If you see this twice, MPI is working

But, when I run the app, I get a flash of a window on the screen, but the app doesnt start. I made sure to start with the -smp flag.

All I can think of right now before I head to bed is that you should make sure you've got your .Net Framework updated, correct drivers installed, and different Machine Id's for each running source of F@H.

For the SMP version, I'm not sure how that bad boy works now-a-days. I wasn't able to get it to work correctly with the drop-in binary 6.24. Didn't have the motivation beyond an hour to get that working so I just set up 2 cpu clients. >_>

GL however!

That SMP client can sometimes be tough to get working 😱

What operating system do you have?

Yeah, this is quite frustrating. BOINC was easy to set up and get to run. I downloaded and installed 6.24, but its stuck saying "Completed 0 out of 500000 steps (0 percent) since last night. All my processors are maxed out, so it must be doing something 😕

I have Vista Business.

I just downloaded the single CPU version and have it running on 1 processor. I was going to try to re-install it in a different folder and assign that another processor, but it finds my existing copy and asks me to remove or repair. I might just go back to running SETI@Home until this gets sorted out.

Was there mention of installing in a certain place or avoiding Program Files or another folder?

Also, did you run it as Administrator?

About a month ago I installed both - the GPU went amazingly easy, I had some trouble with the SMP.

Yeah, it said to avoid Program Files, to install it in the Users folder, which I did. I'm pretty sure I ran it as Administrator. The GPU install was easy for me also, the SMP is giving me problems. I'll try again a bit later. I'll give this install guide a try from scratch:

Install guide for SMP

Was the above guide the one you used? Its version 6.23, the MPICH version.

Yes, that is what I used.

Good luck!!

It didnt work, I followed the directions exactly. The install went fine, when I tried to start it, I saw a real quick flash of a window on the screen, then nothing. So, I gave up on that, downloaded 6.24 and tried that again. Its working this time, phew. Finally, I got it to work.
