OK my brother inlaw has a sony vaio laptop that needs a new internal harddrive, he was at best buy and saw a external 250gig laptop hardrive and wanted to know by leaving the bad orignal hardrive out and hooking up the external will that work? thax the laptop was built for windows xp btw.

check if his BIOS can support booting off USB. If it can, it'll work. slowly though. I would highly recomend just getting a normal internal HD.

Absolutely correct! People keep thinking external hdd is as fast as an internal ones, well that is a myth that will always be. I say replace the internal hdd with a bigger size, faster rpm and high cache instead of an external one.
