Question about engine coolant

The owners manual says to only use Honda All Season Type 2 coolant, other brands will corrode the engine. Is this true? Can I just use Prestone or something else?

Depends. You may want to see if the Honda coolant is that much more erxpensive than Prestone, and also whether ir not using something else impacts your factory warranty (If any more exists). That being said, the Prestone "One" type may work just fine, read the label, and make sure your car isn't excluded.

I say this because Honda does use some specific fluids. (power steering, transmission, etc)

Why risk screwing something up on an item worth thousands of dollars just to save a few bucks?

Use what they tell you to use.

Go advance, walmart, etc... and get the ALL car brand store name coolant. Just about all coolant is made at the same place.
And don;t buy prestone as it is the SAME as the store name brand just it cost more for the name.

I know for my Aztek, the manual reccomends a special coolant.

Dex-Cool is the name I believe. I spend the extra bucks and buy it.

Go to the parts store and read the bottles before buying them. They will say if they are made to the spec your manufacture requires and NO you cant void you warranty if you use one that is as good. Just make sure to keep your reciept/bottle if anything should happen and the dealership looks for a out.

And if I remember right you and the guy above need Dex-Cool stuff which has additives and longer life. And if you pour in another brand with that stuff still in the engine and rad will cause a chain reaction and start to eat the metal. So make sure what ever you do, now a days with so many different types, to read your owners manual or even the cap on the overflow bottle and use what they tell you to use or all hell can break loose 😉

if your coolant is green buy the green stuff
if your coolant is orange buy the orange stuff
if you dont know/care buy the yellow stuff

🙂

I would go with what Honda recommends. Who cares if it costs you $30 instead of $15? It's a hell of a lot cheaper than a new engine.
