question about employment history check

I have a question: I did some part time ebay business and some web design for clients (got cash) when I did not have job in between two employment periods. Of course I don't have W-2 for my own business. Should I mention those on my resume's employment history?

My question is: is my W-2 job history bound to my SSN? Is there any way for hiring manager to check SSN to verify my job history?

My concern is I do not have W-2 evidence of the "home business", so I don't know whether I should mention those on my resume. If I don't mention, then there is black-out spot for that year.

definatly mention it, although they probably wont consider it work experianc as its not on the books. Just dont try to get a web design job based only on that experiance.

Can those clients write you a letter of recommendation? It doesn't have to say you founded your own interactive agency, just that you did some good work for them, and if possible give the dates? This is done all the time, btw, and can be 1-2 short paragraphs, preferably on their letterhead.

Without that, you should still mention it, say you were freelancing. It would help if you had actually established your own company or subchapter S corp, and then filed taxes (which would be minimal, if you do them correctly). Then you could say you were running that company, and THAT would actually be appealling. But at the very least, mention it - sometimes they don't even check for small work periods.
