When you email a resume, do you just send a lone resume and that's it? Or do you put like a short cover letter and introduction, etc? Which one is better? I kinda feel like I should write something with my resume.

The email body will be your "cover letter"

Just attach the resume, that's it.

That's what all the books and stuff have said anyway.

I would at least write a small message that you send with your resume. It will give the individual a better idea of where you're coming from.

Then again, it depends on who you are sending the resume to. If it's just the HR department, the resume might be sufficient alone. If your directing it to the hiring manager, then, by all means, please do send a cover letter with it. :)

What if no attachments are allowed and the body has to contain the resume? Just send the resume, right?

Out of caution, I have put in as plain text (be careful on formatting) and included a note at the end of the email that it is attached as a .doc file as well. I personally would look unfavorably if I were ever in a hiring position (in the computer field) and someone attached a propietary format file.
