I've heard varying opinions on this topic.

Do I merge my cover letter and resume into a single pdf?
Send them as separate .doc's?
Merge docs?
Copy/paste cover letter into the body of email instead?

This. If you are sending an email resume, the body of the email is automatically the cover letter and the resume itself is attachment.

It's next the option for "I should have just left the thread instead of posting a useless comment"

Ok, it sounds like I'll put it in the body of the email. Right now its layout is:

Companies contact and address

Body

My address and contact info

I assume I should omit the companies address section, but should I leave my own?

I prefer to receive them as a single PDF. It is easier fast and easier for me to file them in my electronic pending / reviewed / interviewed / hired folders that way.

Yup, the email would be your cover letter.

The best thing is to check out their website to see what format they prefer. I see some people mention PDF, which could be a preferred format for some companies. However others may hate having PDF because they may dump the DOC file into their system for HR use.

He makes a perfect point. Don't think. Put them both into one PDF and send it. Boom, done.

The posting says to "send a cover letter and resume." It doesn't go into any more detail.
