Question about EDTV

I want to get them a new TV. They don't watch much TV, they're around 70 years old. They mostly watch just the local channels. But I still feel bad about the 32" Apex that I gave them for Christmas several years back. Even they could tell it was low quality. I want to upgrade them again now.

I want to get them a flat-panel TV. But, they won't be watching any HD, they don't even own a DVD player! So, I was wondering what you guys think I should get them, for standard cable watching. Would an EDTV panel look great for Standard Definition cable TV? Is that my best choice? Or do I just get an HDTV set and use an over-the-air antenna to pickup some beatiful local HD broadcasts?

Any deals on EDTVs or maybe old tube TVs that are slimmer than the old days?

Help!

If they just watch the local channels and they are broadcast in HD, I would say go with a HDTV that has the QAM tuner. Otherwise, if they watch analog SDTV the majority of the time, I would probably go with an EDTV, as some HDTVs do not look nice when viewing analog SDTV signals.

If you setup a hdtv with a qam tuner for them and get it working they wont believe how good the quality is on the over the air stations in hd. PBS in HD alone is worth the price of admission. a 32-37 budget HD box will cost within 100-200 of a edtv flat panel anyway. Look at the Olevias, they are cheap and work very well.
