Question about Earthmate Power Supply and UPS

I have a APC 1300 VA UPS that I only have hooked up to my PC and my monitor. I have been having problems with the UPS as long as I remember. Primarily, my PC shuts off any time the UPS activates the battery.

According the the front panel, I am only using 17% of the capacity of the UPS. My monitor is an 23" Dell LCD and my PC has a 500W Antec EarthWatts PSU. I sent a note to APC and I received the following response:

The Back UPS outputs pure sine wave when it is receiving power from the wall, and it outputs stepped approximation to a sine wave when on battery mode. Stepped approximation to a sine wave is an ideal for most of the modern Computer and Computer related equipment. However, if the connected equipment does not accept stepped approximation to a sine wave, then it will shutdown as soon as the UPS transfers to battery. My research has found that the Antec Earthwatts 500 W power supply requires pure sine wave as well as the transfer time of the UPS should be less 4 ms in order for it to work properly. In this case, the Back UPS will not support the Antec Earthwatts 500 W power supply as it outputs stepped approximation to a sine wave on battery mode and the transfer time of the Back UPS is 4 to 8 ms.

I just ordered a replacement battery for the UPS (since the battery failed the self diagnostics) but if I really need sine wave and a faster transfer time, I need to cancel the order and get a different UPS. It sounds like he is trying to upsell me a new UPS but I'm not sure. My gut tells me that this UPS should be able to handle my system.

Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Seems like a simpler solution would be to get another power supply for your your comp?

Any PSU / Brand other than the EarthWatts work? Recommendations? The battery shipped already (so much for slow budget shipping) so I guess it would be easier to keep the UPS and replace my PSU.

Thanks.

You're looking for a PSU without active PFC, ideally passive PFC. Frankly, that's going to be very difficult to find in a modern PSU. Older power supplies and crappy generic power supplies are going to be your best bet if you want to go that route, but you might not be able to find a PSU like that that's going to work for you...

Whether a PSU with active-PFC can cope with a simulated sine wave is just a guessing game, and your best bet may be to ask some PSU manufacturers.
