question about dvd upconverting players/hdtv on directv

Basically, i wanting to know if the quality of an upconverted standard dvd on a 720p hd tv is on par with a normal hd dvd player. Also, how does the upconversion compare to standard dvd. Lastly, I have standard directv box considering the crappy selection of hd channels out right now on directv, and wondering if its just my tv or what about this problem. I get really muddy/grainy picture on my lcd tv with the standard directv box, on both standard coaxial and svideo connections; I was wondering if its possible to get a closer to digital picture from a standard box and if its normal to have that kind of graininess from the standard box.

Upconversion to 720p from a normal DVD looks waaaaay better than your standard 480p DVD. However, it doesnt even come close to real HD-DVD. I used an upconversion DVD player for my 50" DLP TV and I was very happy with the picture quality compared to a standard 480p DVD player. I bought the Xbox 360 HD-DVD player thinking it wouldnt be THAT much better than my upconversion DVD player, but I was truly amazed at the difference.

Unfortunately if you have a standard direcTV box running through composite or s-video the picture is going to look grainy and muddy and there is nothing you can do about it. you're essentially getting a 480i signal and your TV is stretching it to fit the screen. An HD box will give you a 480p picture on SDTV channels which makes it look a little better, but your TV will still be stretching the picture.
