Question about DVD-ROM

I would update the firmware of the CDRW burner combo - the reason for most firmware updates is media compatibility. I would also update the ASPI layer (download from adaptec.com) software on the notebook computer - solves some strange optical drive problems. In fact, why don't you copy the ASPI updating software onto a CD and update any computer system you come in contact with - be a Johnny ASPIseed, if you will... 😉 Very few people are aware of the necessity to keep this item updated for best operation.
. What media type was the DVD burned on?

Is this update not operating-system dependent? What happens if I have a bare hard drive with no operating system in it? Will the firmware update go directly to BIOS?

Often firmware updates only work from raw DOS though I guess some do have the ability to update from within Windows. You should be able to update the firmware from a floppy drive - if the notebook lacks a floppy drive, you can format a small DOS partition on the HD and boot from that to update the drive's firmware. Unf you can't use a bootable CD as the drive shouldn't be in use when updating its firmware.
. The ASPI layer software is OS dependent - pick the right one for your version of Win. Not sure what the process is if you are using something other than Win, but I would assume that any recent distro of Linux would already by updated as the last tweak of the ASPI layer is a year or so old.
